Starting your journey into coffee roasting can feel like a leap and finding the right equipment can be difficult, especially with so many machines on the market. The ROEST S100 is a compact machine with professional-level features, offering a combination of automatic and fully manual control options, making it adaptable to many learning styles. Here are three main reasons why it’s a must-have starter sample roaster:

A roaster built for learning and experimentation 

ROEST are the only sample roasters that allow both automatic and fully manual roasting, giving beginners a gentle learning curve while still offering room to experiment. For example, you could start by using a pre-set profile that’s already downloaded on your machine, making it really easy to get good results right away. As you learn more about roasting, you can gradually take control to make small changes, experimenting with variables like the development time to see how they affect the coffee’s flavor profile. The S100 comes equipped with two sensors to monitor bean temperature and environmental temperature, i.e., the air temperature, in real-time, just like full-scale commercial roasters. These two very accurate, sensitive, and fast probes give you precise data to help you see how the coffee responds as you make changes. Most machines of this size don’t have an accurate bean temperature probe, making it harder to understand what’s really happening. With these data insights, even new roasters can get a clearer picture of how the temperature changes impact the coffee. The S100 also offers precise control over power in 0.5% increments, which lets you make adjustments that feel more intuitive.

The S100 has similarities to commercial roasters in design and features without the hefty price tag or size. With a stirred drum design, control over airflow and drum speed, and the ability to roast by sight and smell with a small trier, the S100 brings the essentials of professional roasting to a smaller, more accessible format. Software with tools for managing a small roasting setup, such as inventory tracking, quality control features, and cupping sessions, is also included.

Small batch production

The S100 might be a small machine, but has plenty of power to produce a surprising amount of coffee. Some ROEST customers started their own roasting businesses on the back of one of these roasters, gradually moving to bigger machines once they’d established a name for themselves. 

The roasting time is fast—because it’s an air roaster, you can fully develop a batch of coffee in less than 5 minutes, which is impossible in a traditional drum roaster. You can start one batch as soon as the previous one ends, making your workflow even faster—and of course, because it’s automatic, you can do other things at the same time, like packing, or cupping, or looking after your customers. There’s also no limit to how many batches you can handle a day; the machine never needs to rest—though you might have to!

Growing with the ROEST S100

As roasters gain more confidence, it’s common to outgrow their starter equipment. However, the S100 is designed to grow with you, allowing for easy-to-install upgrades. The ROEST sample roasters are there with you for life!

To upgrade to an S100 Plus, you can install first crack detection and an inlet temperature sensor. There’s no need to trade it in for a new machine, and you can install upgrades yourself, you don’t need to hire a technician – we’ll help you with the installation if you need it. 

With the inlet kit installed, you can then think about the 200g kit as well so you can double your capacity. With 200g batches and your fine-tuned profile it is suddenly very easy to produce a kilogram of coffee, and plenty of commercial roasteries still rely on ROEST sample roasters to roast their most special coffees, for example their competition lots.
