How the ROEST P3000 helped Hakone Coffee launch its own coffee line

Hakone Coffee entered a new era: roasting their own coffee with the ROEST P3000

Introducing Hakone Coffee

Nestled in the heart of Oslo, Hakone Coffee is a local startup with a mission to bring high-quality coffee to the community. Since opening in July 2024, Hakone has quickly grown to have two cozy locations with Japanese-inspired aesthetics. The shop thrives in collaboration, frequently rotating roasters to keep the coffee selection exciting. At its core, Hakone is dedicated to making specialty coffee accessible and even more enjoyable for everyone.

The search for a production roaster

As the coffee industry continues to navigate the changes in the C-market, Hakone sought ways to become more self-sufficient and run their shops more sustainably while maintaining quality. With limited in-house roasting experience, the team needed an intuitive, efficient, and sustainable solution. That’s where the ROEST P3000 came in.

"With the current financial increase in the C-market, we were looking for ways to be self-sufficient and run our shops in a more sustainable way. With minimal experience in roasting, the ROEST P3000 seemed like the most obvious fit for us when keeping the above challenges in mind," says Antonio Natali, Head of Coffee at Hakone.

First impression of the ROEST P3000

From the outset, the ROEST P3000 impressed Antonio and his team. Its ease of use and 1-3 kg batch capacity made it a great fit for their needs. "The P3000 is aesthetically pleasing, super easy to use, and a perfect introduction to roasting on our own," Antonio notes.

Meeting Hakone’s roasting needs

When considering a production roaster, Antonio needed a machine that could deliver efficiency, consistency, and simplicity–the P3000 checked all those boxes. "I knew we needed an efficient, beginner-friendly air roaster that would allow me to roast several batches consecutively, all on my own. That's exactly what the ROEST P3000 provides, and it consistently delivers great results,” Antonio shared.

Launching Hakone limited edition coffee
Before the arrival of the P3000 in their roasting space, Antonio and the team were able to roast on the P3000 at ROEST HQ. This allowed them to roast their own coffee with the team's support, building their roasting skills.

"We've actually been able to launch our own in-house coffees, roasted on the P3000, and they've become incredibly popular, selling out quickly. While these coffees have been limited editions, they've proven that it's definitely possible for us to roast on our own."

Maintenance and cleaning
Efficiency isn’t just about roasting–it’s about keeping the machine in top shape with minimal downtime. Fortunately, Antonio has found the cleaning and maintenance process straightforward and time-efficient.

"The cleaning process is surprisingly smooth as well, which is an important aspect when it comes to efficiency and saving time after a long roasting session."

Looking to the future

As the team eagerly awaits the arrival of the ROEST P3000 in their roasting space, they continue to refine their roasting skills and look forward to the ability to roast in-house; unlocking creative control, cost-effiency, and a deeper connection to the coffee they serve.

For other coffee shops considering in-house roasting and launching their own coffee, Hakone’s experience proves that the right equipment can make all the difference. The ROEST P3000 is not just a roaster–it’s a gateway to innovation and self-sufficiency in the world of specialty coffee.
